Operation Guide | Pipe Misalignment: What Should You Check Before Clamping and After Facing?

Oct 30,2026
During HDPE pipe butt fusion, misalignment can result from inadequate pipe support, incorrect positioning, pipe ovality, or incomplete facing. Identify the cause before making adjustments, and avoid using excessive closing pressure to force the pipe ends into alignment.
Before clamping, focus on pipe positioning and support. After facing, check end-face contact and alignment. Checking at both stages helps reduce repeated adjustments and prepares the pipes for the next welding step.
1. Before Clamping: Check Pipe Positioning and Support
Check the clamp inserts
Make sure the clamp inserts match the pipe’s outside diameter and are correctly installed and secured. Remove dirt and debris from the inserts and the pipe surfaces they contact to ensure reliable gripping and positioning.
Check the pipe support height
Adjust the position and height of the pipe supports so the pipes sit naturally in the clamps. Prevent long pipe sections from sagging, lifting, or pulling sideways. Adjust the external supports before tightening the clamps.
Check for pipe ovality
Inspect both pipe ends for visible ovality or deformation. If ovality affects clamping or alignment, re-round the pipe according to the applicable procedure, then check it again.
Check pipe projection and positioning
Leave enough pipe projecting beyond the clamps for facing, following the machine’s operating instructions. Make sure the pipes are positioned straight, then tighten the clamps evenly. Watch for any lifting or sideways movement during tightening.
2. After Facing: Check End-Face Contact and Alignment
After facing, wait until the facer has stopped completely before separating the pipe ends, removing the facer, and clearing away the shavings. Avoid touching or contaminating the prepared fusion surfaces.
Check that both end faces are fully machined
Make sure both pipe ends have been faced across the entire surface, with no unmachined areas remaining. If facing is incomplete, check the clamping and facer condition, then re-face the pipes according to the applicable procedure.
Check the gap between the pipe ends
Slowly bring the pipe ends together and check contact around the entire circumference. If there is a visible or uneven gap, check for angled positioning, loose clamping, or incomplete facing. Do not use excessive closing pressure to force the gap closed.
Check pipe-end mismatch
Check for differences in the outside surface level around the full circumference, rather than inspecting only the top. The pattern of misalignment can help guide your checks:

· One pipe sits consistently higher or lower: Check support height, clamp insert installation, and pipe positioning.
· Mismatch occurs only in certain areas: Check pipe ovality and dimensional differences between the two pipes.
· Alignment changes again after adjustment: Check for pipe slippage, binding at the supports, or external forces pulling on the pipes.
Allowable mismatch and end-face gaps must comply with the welding standard and procedure specified for the project.
Check that the pipes remain secure
As the pipe ends are brought together and separated, watch for slipping, rotation, or lifting caused by the supports. Confirm that the pipes are securely clamped, properly supported, and moving smoothly before continuing.
3. After Adjustment: Recheck Before Heating
If the clamps are loosened or the pipes are rotated or repositioned after facing, re-face them as required by the applicable procedure. Then check the end-face gap and alignment again.
Before inserting the heating plate, confirm that:
· Both end faces are fully machined, clean, and free from shavings or contamination.
· The end-face gap and mismatch meet the applicable requirements.
· The pipes are securely clamped and do not slip during opening or closing.
· The supports remain stable and allow smooth pipe movement.
Correct positioning and support before clamping, followed by careful alignment checks after facing, help reduce repeated adjustments and keep the welding process running smoothly. If the pipe ends still do not align, identify and correct the cause before proceeding to heating.
